Chimney Repair in North Bergen, NJ

North Bergen's chimneys are brick stacks on two- to four-family houses, most built for coal and now venting gas boilers and water heaters, plus some that have been abandoned after conversions to direct-vent systems. On the Palisades ridge they take the full force of wind off the river, and the top courses, crowns and caps deteriorate fastest.

Repair, repoint or rebuild in North Bergen

Inspection first, including the flue if it serves an appliance. Repoint where brick is sound and joints have worn. Rebuild from a solid course up when the top is loose, with a proper crown and a stainless cap. Reline flues serving gas appliances with correctly sized stainless steel liners when they are unlined or damaged. Cap and seal, or remove below the roofline, chimneys that are no longer used.

If the roof is also due for replacement, do the chimney first so the new flashing is set into sound masonry and so no masonry debris lands on a new membrane.

North Bergen Specifics

Chimney problems we see in North Bergen

Wind-stressed tall stacks

Chimneys rising several feet above flat roofs on the ridge sway in strong wind. Mortar at the top fails first, bricks loosen, and the stack can lean toward the roof or the street.

Missing crowns and caps

Many chimneys were finished with a thin mortar wash that has long since cracked away. Rain goes straight into the flue and the brick, feeding freeze-thaw damage. A proper crown and stainless cap stop it.

Flashing at the membrane roof

The joint between brick and a flat roof is often sealed only with tar, which separates from both surfaces. Proper base flashing and counterflashing set into the mortar is the fix.

Interior deterioration from gas appliances

Unlined masonry flues venting gas boilers absorb acidic condensation, deteriorate from inside and can shed debris that blocks the flue and interferes with draft. A correctly sized stainless steel liner restores safe venting.

Abandoned open chimneys

After a heating conversion, old chimneys are sometimes left open at the top. Rain enters, saturates the masonry and causes damage inside the building. Capping and sealing, or removal below the roofline, solves it.

FAQ

Chimney Repair in North Bergen: your questions

My chimney looks like it is leaning. What should I do?

A leaning chimney above a flat roof in a dense neighborhood is a safety concern and should be inspected promptly. The usual cause is failed mortar in the upper courses. We assess how far down the damage goes and rebuild from a sound course up with a new crown and cap.

Is it worth repointing a chimney that only vents a water heater?

If the chimney is in use, it needs to be sound and safe regardless of what it vents. Repointing worn joints, capping the flue and relining if needed keeps the chimney working and prevents water damage to the building. If the appliance is replaced with a direct-vent unit later, the chimney can then be sealed or removed.

Can you flash the chimney into my flat roof properly?

Yes. We install base flashing that is part of the roof membrane and counterflashing let into the mortar joints of the chimney, then cap the top. This two-part system handles movement between the chimney and roof far better than tar alone, which is what we usually find on North Bergen roofs.

Do you work on chimneys on larger apartment buildings?

Yes. Brick chimneys and boiler stacks on apartment buildings along North Bergen's main avenues present the same problems as those on smaller houses, just at a larger scale. We inspect, repoint, rebuild, reline and cap them, and coordinate with building management on access and scheduling.
