What to do before we arrive

  1. Move furniture, electronics and valuables away from the wet area and put a bucket or tarp under the drip.
  2. If the ceiling is bulging with water, poke a small hole with a screwdriver to drain it into a bucket before it collapses.
  3. Do not go on the roof. Wet shingles and loose debris are how people get hurt. Photos from the ground or a window are enough.
  4. Photograph the damage inside and out, and note the date. This helps if you file an insurance claim.
  5. Call (201) 727-3113. Tell us where the water is showing and what the roof looked like before.

We schedule leak and storm calls as quickly as our crews allow during business hours (Mon – Sat: 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM). We will give you an honest time frame when you call.

North New Jersey gets hit from several directions. Nor'easters drive rain sideways under shingles in winter and early spring, summer thunderstorms bring straight-line wind and the occasional hail, and heavy snow followed by a thaw loads roofs and gutters with ice. The damage is not always obvious. Lifted shingles can partially reseal and look fine from the ground while the nails underneath have torn through the mat.

Asset Roofing & Chimney repairs storm-damaged shingle and flat roofs for homeowners and commercial property owners across Bergen County and North New Jersey. We photograph and document everything we find, which matters if you are filing a claim. We can help document the damage and assist with your insurance claim so the scope your adjuster sees matches what is actually wrong with the roof.

Right after a storm: stay off the roof, photograph interior damage and anything that landed in the yard, keep receipts for anything you buy to protect the house, and call (201) 727-3113. We are licensed and insured, estimates are free, and we will tell you plainly whether the damage calls for a repair or whether the storm simply finished off a roof that was already near the end.

Common Problems

Signs you may need storm damage roof repair

Wind-Lifted and Creased Shingles

Wind gets under the tab, bends it back, and creases the shingle along the nail line. Many settle back down and look normal, but the crease is a permanent break. These shingles tear off in the next storm and leak before that.

Missing Shingles and Exposed Underlayment

The obvious version of wind damage. Bare patches of underlayment or decking will take on water with the next rain, and the shingles above the gap have usually lost their seal too. The visible missing shingles are rarely the full extent.

Hail Bruising

Hail knocks granules loose and bruises the asphalt mat beneath. From the ground it looks like nothing. Up close you see soft dark circles that will crack open as the sun works on the exposed asphalt over the following months.

Tree Limbs and Flying Debris

Branches gouge, puncture, and scrape shingles down to the mat. Debris that lands and slides can tear ridge caps and flashing on the way down. Even a limb that bounced off deserves a look at the spot it landed.

Flat Roof Membrane Tears and Blow-Offs

High wind can lift a flat roof membrane at the edges and peel seams open. Debris landing on a flat roof punctures it. Heavy rain afterward then ponds on top of the damage, which turns a small tear into a saturated insulation problem.

Damaged Flashing, Vents, and Chimney Caps

Storms take the small things first: vent caps, turbine covers, chimney caps, and loose counter-flashing. Each one is an open path for water, and because they are small, they are easy to miss in a quick look from the driveway.

Honest Guidance

Repair or Replace?

Storm damage can usually be repaired when

  • Damage is confined to a few slopes or one area of impact
  • The surrounding shingles are still flexible and sealed
  • Matching shingles are available so the repair blends in
  • Decking under the damage is dry and sound
About our repair service

A storm often tips a roof into replacement when

  • Creasing and lifted shingles cover most of the roof
  • Hail bruising is widespread across multiple slopes
  • The roof was already old and brittle before the storm
  • A large section of decking was punctured or soaked
About our replacement service

Insurance coverage depends on your policy and the cause of damage. We document what we find; the coverage decision rests with your insurer.

FAQ

Storm Damage Roof Repair questions, answered

Should I file an insurance claim for roof storm damage?

If the damage is sudden and storm-related and the repair cost is meaningfully above your deductible, it is usually worth a claim. Photograph everything before cleanup, report it to your insurer promptly, and keep receipts for any protective measures. We can help document the damage so the claim reflects the real scope. Policy details vary, so read yours or ask your agent about deductibles and exclusions.

Can you help with my insurance claim?

Yes. We inspect the roof, photograph each item of damage with notes, and provide a written scope your adjuster can review. We can assist with the claim process and be present when the adjuster inspects if that helps. We do not make coverage decisions and we do not inflate scopes; our documentation describes what is actually there.

How soon after a storm should I have the roof looked at?

Soon. Exposed underlayment and creased shingles take on water with every rain that follows, and most insurance policies expect you to report damage and limit further loss within a reasonable time. Even if nothing is leaking inside yet, an assessment after a significant wind or hail event tells you where you stand before the next one.

My roof looks fine from the ground. Could it still be damaged?

Yes, and often it is. Hail bruising is invisible from below. Wind-creased shingles lie back down. Lifted flashing and torn pipe boots cannot be seen from the driveway. The attic is a better early indicator: look for damp spots on the sheathing or insulation after a storm. An on-roof inspection settles the question.

How much does storm damage roof repair cost?

It depends on the extent of the damage, whether decking is involved, how accessible the roof is, and whether the storm exposed older problems that also need attention. Insurance may cover some or all of it depending on your policy and deductible. We provide a free, documented estimate so you can compare it with the insurer's assessment.

What if a tree is still on my roof?

Keep everyone out of the rooms beneath it and do not try to move it. A large limb resting on damaged framing can shift. Call your insurer and call us; the limb needs to be removed before the roof can be properly assessed, and we will coordinate on the order of work and protection of the opening.
