Two new chimney caps on a brick chimney in winter

A chimney without a cap is an open pipe to the sky. Rain falls directly down the flue onto the damper and into the firebox or the appliance connection. Birds and squirrels move in. Leaves collect on the smoke shelf. Sparks from a wood fire exit unchecked. Every one of these problems is solved by a piece of stainless steel that takes an hour to install.

Asset Roofing & Chimney installs and repairs chimney caps across North New Jersey. Most of what we fit is stainless steel, sized to the flue and secured to the tile or the crown, with a mesh screen to keep animals out and a hood to shed rain. For chimneys with multiple flues we install a single multi-flue cap that covers the whole top. Copper and custom-fabricated caps are available for homes where appearance matters.

If you look up at your chimney and see bare flue tiles sticking out of the crown, or a cap that is rusted, dented or sitting crooked after a windstorm, that is your sign. A missing cap is also the first thing we check when a homeowner reports water in the firebox or a rusted damper.

Common Problems

Signs you may need chimney caps

No cap at all

Plenty of older chimneys have never had one. Open flues take on water with every rain, which rusts the damper, erodes the mortar in the smoke chamber and drips into the firebox. Adding a cap is the single quickest improvement to an uncapped chimney.

Rusted or damaged cap

Galvanized caps rust through within years, and rust streaks down the crown and brick are the tell. Caps can also be dented or blown loose by wind. A failed cap offers little more protection than none and should be replaced with stainless.

Animals or nests in the flue

Raccoons, squirrels and birds use open flues for shelter and nesting, especially in spring. Nests block the draft and can catch fire; animals that die inside leave odors that linger for weeks. A capped flue with intact mesh ends the problem.

Downdrafts and smoke in the room

Wind blowing across an open flue can push air back down and bring smoke with it. A cap with a proper hood breaks the wind and helps the flue draw. Persistent downdraft on a capped chimney may call for a different cap design.

Debris on the smoke shelf

Leaves, twigs and roofing grit that fall into an open flue pile up on the smoke shelf behind the damper, where they absorb water and hold moisture against the masonry. A cap keeps that debris out and keeps the smoke shelf dry.

Our Process

How chimney caps works with Asset

  1. 01

    Measure and recommend

We measure the flue and look at the crown, flue count and wind exposure. Most chimneys take a standard stainless cap; some need a multi-flue cover or a design that handles downdraft.

  2. 02

    Install

The cap is fastened to the flue tile or anchored to the crown, depending on the design. Installation is usually completed in a single short visit.

  3. 03

    Report back

Since we are on the roof anyway, we note the condition of the crown, flashing and masonry and let you know if anything else needs attention.

FAQ

Chimney Caps questions, answered

Does my chimney really need a cap?

Yes, if the flue is open to the sky. The cost of a cap is small compared to the damage uncapped flues cause over time: rusted dampers, water-soaked smoke chambers, animal removal and odor problems. Even flues that serve a furnace rather than a fireplace should be capped to keep rain and debris out.

What material should a chimney cap be?

Stainless steel for almost everyone. It does not rust, holds up to wind and heat, and costs only modestly more than galvanized steel, which corrodes within a few years. Copper is attractive on the right house and lasts a very long time, at a higher price. We do not recommend galvanized caps.

Can a cap fix a smoking fireplace?

Sometimes. If smoke enters the room mainly on windy days, a cap or a wind-resistant cap design can help by breaking the downdraft. If the fireplace smokes in still weather, the cause is more likely flue size, damper position, a blockage or the house being too tight. An inspection sorts out which.

What is a multi-flue cap?

Many chimneys have more than one flue: one for the fireplace, one for the furnace or water heater. Instead of capping each flue separately, a multi-flue cap is a single stainless cover with a mesh skirt that spans the whole chimney top and anchors to the crown. It also helps protect the crown from direct rain.

What affects the price of a chimney cap?

Size and material are the main factors, along with whether it is a single-flue, multi-flue or custom unit, and how accessible the chimney top is. If the crown is damaged and needs repair before a cap can be mounted properly, that is a separate item. We quote caps as part of a free estimate.
