Roofing and chimney work in Washington
Washington is a compact borough in the Pohatcong valley where Route 31 and Route 57 cross, surrounded on all sides by Washington Township. It grew in the 1800s as a stop on the Morris Canal and the railroad, and in the late 1800s it was known for organ and piano manufacturing. That history left a walkable downtown of brick commercial buildings and blocks of Victorian-era and early-1900s houses close around it.

Housing in Washington
Washington's housing is largely late-1800s and early-1900s: Victorian and foursquare homes with steep, complex roofs, wide porches and tall brick chimneys, many converted to two-family or apartment use over the years. Downtown blocks hold two- and three-story brick commercial buildings with flat roofs behind parapets, often with apartments above the stores. Mid-century capes and ranches fill the borough's edges. Most homes have asphalt shingle roofs, and some older homes still carry slate.
Weather and exposure
The borough sits on the valley floor, where cold air and moisture settle in winter and snow and freeze-thaw cycles are steady. Closely built streets and mature trees shelter most roofs from the worst wind but bring shade and debris. Flat downtown roofs hold snow against parapets and around rooftop penetrations until it melts.
