Repair, repoint or rebuild in Paterson

Start with an inspection, including the flue interior if it serves an appliance. Repointing is appropriate for sound brick with worn joints. Spalled, loose or leaning upper sections should be rebuilt from a solid course up, with a new crown and cap. If the flue is unlined or damaged and serves a boiler or water heater, a correctly sized stainless steel liner is the fix. My Paterson building has a chimney no one uses. Should I remove it?

If no appliance vents through it and it is deteriorating, removing it below the roofline and roofing over the opening eliminates an ongoing leak and maintenance point. If it is sound, capping and sealing it is a simpler option. We can inspect and discuss which makes sense for your building.

Bricks have fallen off my chimney onto the roof. Is it urgent?

Yes, treat it as urgent. Loose bricks indicate that the mortar has failed in the upper section, and more can come down in the next wind. Falling masonry can puncture a flat roof membrane and is a safety hazard. We can inspect and stabilize or rebuild the upper section.

Do you install liners for gas boilers in multifamily buildings?

Yes. We install stainless steel liners sized to the appliances that vent through the flue. On multifamily buildings with more than one appliance, the liner must be sized correctly for the combined load, and we will coordinate with your heating contractor if needed.

Can you flash the chimney when you replace my flat roof?

Yes, and that is the best time to do it. We install proper base flashing with the new membrane and set counterflashing into the chimney mortar joints, then cap the chimney. If the brick itself needs repointing or rebuilding, we do that first so the new flashing is set into sound masonry.
